Catskills Retreat, USA

For New Yorkers, the Catskill Mountains are a vital escape offering recreation, a connection to American history and culture, and a place for scenic beauty. They provide access to outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and fishing, and represent a historic destination for city dwellers, inspired Hudson River School painters, and as the site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

The four‑bedroom villa fuses contemporary sustainability with the vernacular spirit of the Catskills — echoing the region’s historic barns and the romantic landscapes immortalized by Hudson River School painters. At 3,630 square feet, the residence is carefully sited to embrace panoramic views of the northern hills, with cantilevered balconies framing sunrise, sunset, and the drama of the changing seasons.

Designed to rigorous environmental standards, the retreat exemplifies bioclimatic architecture aligned with passive house design principles and state of the art building techniques.

Interiors

Inside, warm timber finishes and natural materials create a cozy, minimalist atmosphere. The upper level houses the master suite and communal living areas, while the lower plinth includes three bedrooms and a family lounge. Balconies on all sides immerse residents in the surrounding forest, with the entrance porch doubling as a sheltered transition zone for snowy or rainy days.

Built to rigorous passive house standards, the retreat integrates a 20kW solar array that produces more energy than the house consumes, Zehnder heat recovery ventilation system, Rheem heat pump water heating, and Unico high-velocity HVAC for optimized comfort. Structural insulated panels envelope the building, ensures year‑round thermal performance. The windows are executed in Quadruple insulation glazing (4-pane).

Just an hour from New York City, the Catskills Retreat is both sanctuary and statement — an invitation to live with environmental stewardship in the uninterrupted wilderness.
